| Carthamin is one of the most notable red plant pigment distributed among reddened flower florets saffolwer (Carthamus tinctorius L.). According to colour tone, the pigment is very similar to the pigment of saffron (Crocus sativus L.). An authentic carthamin (the novel bichalcone glycoside ) is a dark-reddish crystal with a green pearly metallic luster. UV spectrum of carthamin showed its absorption maxima at 517nm in methanol .Carthmin is an abtainable from the dried reddish-brown florets through a special method using a sodium carbonate/citric acid system .Carthmin is a water-insoluble plant pigment and it is considered as a most useful tinctorial additive for cosmetics、food、beverages、soft drinks、fruit jams、textiles etc.The cosmetics、food drinks and textiles coloured with the dye have been used by high-ranking people because of its royal red colour. |
